Tiger Woods is top cat against Sergio Garcia
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Poor Sergio Garcia. There is one way to make him cringe and that is to mention Tiger Woods. And so it was Friday at The Players Championship, even as the erratic Spaniard lit up the Stadium Course with a 7-under par 65. All that did was earn Garcia (11-under) a date with his eternal nemesis. He’ll tee off with a one-shot lead on Woods (67), with all signs pointing to what seems like an inevitable conclusion. Garcia didn’t disappoint when he was asked if he was looking forward to measuring himself against the World No. 1. You could feel the knife going into his side. “No, no,” he protested. “I don’t have to measure myself against anybody. I know what I want to try to do, and any given day I can shoot a round like this and any other day he can shoot a good round and beat me. Like we always say, it’s not a sprint; it’s a marathon. There are going to be good days and not-so-good days, so just got to enjoy the good ones as much as possible.” There haven’t been many good days for Garcia when the two have been paired up with each other. It goes back to the 1999 PGA Championship at Medinah when the 19-year-old Garcia was playing in the group ahead of Woods. Garcia pointed his putter back toward Woods after holing a birdie putt, a challenge Tiger didn’t exactly appreciate. Woods went on to win. The rivalry eventually came to a head on a burning hot Sunday at the 2006 British Open at Hoylake. Woods walked onto the first tee in his intimidating Sunday red, while Garcia — head-to-toe in canary yellow — proceeded to play that way. Woods, with Garcia falling apart, captured the claret jug, shooting 67 to Garcia’s 73. He reportedly texted friends, “I just bludgeoned Tweety Bird.” Indeed, Garcia has been Woods’ little lucky charm. He’s won eight of the 12 PGA Tour events in which they’ve played together in the same group. That day at Hoylake marked the fifth time they had been paired up in a final round, and Garcia is 0 for 5. Garcia is 0-6 against Woods when they’ve gone head-to-head during a weekend, and in the last 10 of those rounds, Garcia is 6-over par and Woods 23-under.
