| Comic-Con 2013: Extended Red Band 'Kick-Ass 2' Trailer Hits Hard |
Universal just finished up the Comic-Con panel for Kick-Ass 2, and while this is certainly the place for exclusive footage, in this case, the Internet wins. A new four-minute trailer just debuted here in Hall H, but director Jeff Wadlow told the crowd that the red band trailer arriving online would be a much more violent, and profanity laden trailer, and he wasn't lying. There's some hard hits, blood splashing and plenty of naughty words from Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Jim Carrey, plus some cool moments for John Leguizamo, Donald Faison and more new cast members. This is going to be wild.

Chloe Moretz appeared via satellite at the panel and it sounds like Hit-Girl has the heart of the theme in this film as she struggles with her identity and growing up without her Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) in her life:
"You need to see who she is and who she wants to be. There's something behind all the layers that she puts on. There's a little girl in there who lost her Dad and doesn't have the power to stand up and face what's happening in her life. She's completely lost in her own self. She has no idea who she is."
She also spoke about the special bond between Hit-Girl and Kick-Ass as the latter superhero becomes her only friend, and stands by her side and she copes with growing up without her parents. Basically, she points out that her journey is about Mindy Macready realizing that she and Hit-Girl are the same person, despite the mask and costume. And that seems to be a key for Dave/Kick-Ass in growing up as well.
But Hit-Girl isn't the only person coping with the loss of a parent. John Leguizamo, who Christopher Mintz-Plasse's character describes as "the Alfred to his evil Bruce Wayne" talked about the villain and right hand man relationship the two develop after Red Mist's mother passes away. In fact, it's the dominatrix outfit and slew of various sex gadgets discovered after her death that fuel his turn into The Mother Fucker. And while that seems kind of twisted, Plasse pointed out that as dark and violent as this film gets, the more controversial parts of the film, involving a dog's murder and some rape, have been cut. Even so, Plasse says, ""I was really scared to do something this intense and this nerve wracking."
As always, the one thing that the actors really praised for getting them on board with the project was the script, and how it built upon the characters introduced in the first film. Aaron Taylor-Johnson described it the most succinctly saying:
"It brought these characters to a whole new level. It leaves no gap left open. Each caharacter has a mad roller coaster that they go on, an emotional one, a life-changing one."
After Kick Ass' (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), reborn as The Mother Fucker, only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) can prevent their annihilation. Donald Faison, John Leguizamo, Morris Chestnut and more also star in Kick-Ass 2, the comic book sequel based on the series by Mark Millar. Jeff Wadlow writes and directs the sequel arriving in theaters on August 16th. Excited yet?
